Examine the existing opening and intended use
Record dimensions, opening directions, visible condition and everyday requirements such as access, cleaning or noise. Ask the installer to inspect the frame and surrounding support. Describe related insulation or facade work. Do not decide the replacement method solely from the advertised characteristics of a new frame; the existing opening and connections matter.
Assign measurement and order approval
Establish who takes final measurements, checks the support and validates the order. Include opening direction, hardware, glazing, finish and the relevant expected performance. Made-to-measure items should not be ordered against unresolved dimensions. If another trade changes the opening or finished level, identify when measurements will be confirmed and who communicates the change.
Compare removal and installation as complete operations
Distinguish what is removed or retained and examine the effects on dimensions and finish. Ask about support preparation, fixing, junctions and weather protection during work. Compare disposal, access and handling. A lower quotation may omit removal or reinstatement rather than offer the same result at a better price.
Coordinate air, water and facade connections
Discuss how the window meets the wall, sill and any insulation. Assign internal and external reinstatement to a contractor. Check the relationship between the replacement and the ventilation arrangement; improved airtightness should not be considered in isolation. Ask for explanations tied to the actual dwelling rather than a blanket assumption that all openings need identical treatment.
Inspect operation and keep product references
At completion, ask for demonstrations of opening, closing and adjustments. Compare the installed references and finishes with the approved order. Record defects with location information and collect operation and maintenance instructions. Check how related work by other trades will protect the new frames. Keep the final reference documents for future adjustment or repair.
Your preparation checklist
- Support and opening examined.
- Final measurements assigned.
- Order details confirmed before manufacture.
- Removal and reinstatement included or assigned.
- Ventilation and facade interfaces considered.
- Operation checked and notices retained.
Questions before you commit
Are two quotations with the same window material equivalent?
Not necessarily. Compare dimensions, glazing, hardware, installation method, preparation and reinstatement.
Should ventilation be reconsidered when replacing windows?
Discuss the effect of the replacement on the dwelling’s air supply and extraction with the relevant professionals.
