Identify which space is intended to be heated
Describe whether the loft will remain unused or become part of the occupied home. The boundary of the heated space helps define the insulation project. Include any later conversion in the discussion so that initial work does not obstruct it. Record access, headroom and services rather than comparing only the advertised thickness of insulation.
Examine the roof before concealing it
Gather information on covering, timber, existing layers and signs of water. Ask the relevant professionals which investigations are needed. Insulation should not hide an unresolved roof defect. Identify damaged areas, the cause still to be confirmed and the responsibility for repair. A visible stain does not by itself identify the route of a leak.
Request a description of the complete assembly
Discuss the support, insulation, air and moisture control layers and the finished surface. Ask how junctions with walls, openings and penetrations will be treated. Compare the complete installed systems, not two material labels. This guide does not prescribe a layer arrangement for a particular roof; the actual construction and exposure must be assessed.
Coordinate services and future maintenance
Mark equipment, cables, ducts and access routes before agreeing the work. Ask who adapts or protects them and how maintenance remains possible after installation. Discuss the relationship with ventilation and any future roof windows. Retain checks and photographs before surfaces conceal the assembly. Do not assume a loft floor can receive extra loads without assessment.
Compare scope and inspect the completed work
Include removal, preparation, access, junctions and finishing in the quotations. Confirm which quantities are measured and which remain assumptions. Agree inspection points before closure and keep product references and instructions. Verify any funding conditions through the official services separately. A complete quotation is more useful than a nominal insulation thickness without installation details.
Your preparation checklist
- Heated volume defined.
- Roof condition examined.
- Complete assembly described.
- Junctions and penetrations assigned.
- Services and maintenance access considered.
- Checks and references retained.
Questions before you commit
Should an unused loft and an occupied loft receive the same proposal?
The intended heated volume and future use affect the project. Ask for a proposal based on the actual arrangement.
Can insulation resolve a roof leak?
The source of water must be investigated and addressed; concealing the area does not establish that the defect is resolved.
