Choosing flooring for renovation

Compare the finish with its support, moisture conditions, installation system and junctions. The best-looking sample is not necessarily a complete proposal for the actual floor.

Describe use and existing conditions

Record room use, cleaning needs, traffic and any constraints on sound or accessibility. Identify the existing support and visible defects. Have uncertainty about moisture, stability or old layers investigated before selecting the preparation. Distinguish a defect in the finish from a problem in the underlying floor rather than assuming replacement will solve both.

Check the full finished height

Consider the support, preparation, underlay, adhesive or fixing method and finish together. Compare the level with doors, thresholds and adjoining rooms. Discuss any changes needed to openings or equipment before ordering. A sample thickness does not describe the finished assembly or establish whether a door will still operate correctly.

Compare comfort and maintenance in the real room

Discuss surface behaviour, cleaning, repair and the effect of sunlight or water where relevant. For noise, distinguish the sound heard within the room from transmission through the building. Ask how the proposed system fits the actual support and objective. A single material label does not demonstrate the acoustic performance of the installed floor.

Prepare quantities and installation details

Agree measurement, layout, cuts, transitions and the allowance used for losses. Include accessory products and preparation in the quotation. Use the quantity tool with the actual package coverage and a justified allowance; it rounds your figures to packages without checking the layout. Do not double-count material already included by the installer.

Inspect and keep the maintenance information

Agree a sample or appearance reference where useful. Ask what confirms that the support is ready before laying. At completion, inspect transitions, edges and the agreed finish and record issues. Retain product references and instructions, including conditions for use after installation. Future repair is easier when the exact installed system remains identifiable.

Your preparation checklist

  • Use and support examined.
  • Moisture and stability questions resolved.
  • Full finished height checked.
  • Acoustic objective distinguished.
  • Quantities and accessories included.
  • Readiness, finish and instructions documented.

Questions before you commit

Does the package calculation decide the installation allowance?

No. Enter an allowance justified by the layout and product. The tool performs the calculation but does not validate the floor plan.

Can every old floor receive a new finish directly?

Have the existing layers and support examined for compatibility with the proposed system.
